Your Stay in Ireland
Living in Ireland
Ireland is a relaxed, informal and friendly place to live.
Host Family Accommodation An important part of your stay is finding a pleasant place to live. The Language Centre of Ireland has a carefully chosen list of families based in the Dublin area, all of whom have been visited and approved. Care is taken not to place more than one student of
any mother tongue with each family. Host family accommodation is arranged on a part-board basis: bed, breakfast, evening meal, Monday-Friday, all meals Saturday and Sunday. Find out more...
Food. Breakfast nowadays is a light meal - fruit juice, cereal, toast and marmalade, tea or coffee. Home-made brown bread is an Irish speciality and Ireland is renowned for its dairy products and fresh meat and fish. Lunch on working days is generally a snack and the main meal (meat or fish served with vegetables, dessert) is usually eaten early, 6.00-7.30pm so that everyone is free to go out again for the evening.
Activities In June and July the long, bright evenings until 10.00pm mean that sporting activities can be enjoyed until quite late.
Houses Irish families live in houses with gardens away from the centre of Dublin City so you travel to school by bus or train. Irish life is friendly and relaxed and you are welcomed as part of the family.
Weather The weather in Ireland is very variable, but is neither very hot nor very cold. You need strong shoes or boots, a waterproof coat or jacket, jeans and warm sweaters. You may prefer to buy suitable clothes when you get here - woollen garments in particular are good value in Ireland.
